There’s a 16-year-old who regularly comes to the same yoga class. She (and a few other teens) were doing yoga for school PE credit, and I thought that was the coolest freakin’ thing. SO much better than the awkward PE classes at school with the cotton shorts and t-shirts, having to change in the mildew-y locker rooms around all your classmates.
Beyond all the angst, how lucky are teens today that yoga is so accessible to them? I think I would’ve survived my teen years with a lot less drama and stress if I were practicing yoga regularly.
I probably would’ve had fewer petty fights with my brother when we were younger. Um… and probably all the petty fights among my social circle. Yoga’s really helped me with letting things roll off my back, taking some calming breaths and re-focusing my mind.
I also would’ve been more body-aware and confident physically if I had yoga in my life. I probably could have fixed my slouchy posture issues… because my mom’s reminders went in one ear and out the other. I could have played to my strengths and not felt so self-conscious of my arms or shoulders. I could have been using postures to fix any aches and pains from poor sleep habits.
Hindsight is always 20/20, right? I guess I should be thankful that I’ve found yoga, and it’s a big part of my life now. I do plan to continue exposing my kid to it – or any regular physical/mental activity that encourages health and wellness.
How would life have been different if you had found yoga earlier?
