A day off for Mother’s Day?

Running through my blog reader, I came across these stats about what moms want for Mother’s Day.

According to a survey of 2,123 U.S. mothers with children under the age of 18 we conducted this April with NPD Group, 14.6% of moms prefer handmade gifts, followed very closely by a day off (13.6%) and a spa day (12.9%).

The husband had been asking me all week what I want for Mother’s Day, and I’m pretty good on gift items. We’re planning to attend a friend’s wedding in Hawaii next year, so I feel like all our pretty pennies need to save up for that. Hawaii isn’t cheap! And then when that blog post came up, I was thinking I definitely don’t want a handmade gift – at least not at his age. My kid is 19 months old. I’ve seen his school artwork. We have a ton of it, and while it’s cute-ish, I don’t know what to do with it as it piles up in the kitchen.

But the second most popular wish was having a day off. Hmm… I would *almost* agree with that. Mother’s Day is always on a Sunday. And you know what’s open on most Sundays? NOTHING. You’re fighting every other mother in town for the same few brunch reservation spots and spa appointments. And who’s picking up the slack at home? Probably not Dad because he’s now keeping the kids occupied so Mommy can have a “day off”.

My kind of day off would fall on a weekday – middle of the week while everyone else is at work. All businesses are open normal hours. No crowds.

I can take my Kindle to a little cafe like this…

… and enjoy some quiet reading time with a hot chai latte.

I can run all those errands that we never have time to do before/after work like dropping off the dry cleaning.

And best of all, I can make one of those daytime yoga classes!!! (Er… in the case of some entrepreneurial yogis at SXSW, maybe I could do some performance yoga for tips?)

There are so many great offerings at studios between 9 and 5 that I never get to try. I would even have time to take a hot shower and pick up the kid from school like usual, feeling refreshed for the rest of my day.

Moms, what would you do on a day off of YOUR choosing?
