I about wet my pants when I first saw a giant Coming Soon sign for the new Athleta store at the Domain. I had no idea they were finally coming to Austin. I had been stalking the website for new store announcements and harassing them on Twitter for over a year, and well, it’s finally here!!!
I’ve been a fan of Athleta’s clothing line for a few years now. I own a couple pairs of yoga pants, a top, some dresses, some bathing suits and a couple pairs of hiking pants. Because everything is designed for athletes (and athletic-minded women), they really take time to think about functional performance of each piece in addition to beautiful and flattering designs and patterns.
What I especially love is their attention to supporting the girls. Ya know, the GIRLS. Their bathing suit sizes are based on bra sizes and not just S, M, L. Their support tops have ratings for how much actual chest support you’ll get wearing them. And the tanks have built-in “headlight” coverage, which I appreciate on laundry day so I don’t have to fish out little foam inserts from the bottom of the washing machine.
Those of us on their mailing list got a sneak peek at the store and a chance to shop the new fall collection (which I had been coveting ever since the catalog showed up at my house). They had little bites and beverages while we perused the store and gave away little branded hair ties.
I had been in an Athleta store at the Grove in Los Angeles last year, and the layout is very similar. All of the tables are on wheels, so they can open up floor space to host classes in the stores, much like Lululemon. And while this is a women’s only brand, they were fully stocked with workout tops, bottoms, jackets, dresses, casual outfits, a few bathing suits and accessories.
I left the store picking up the new Royal Pigeon Tank and All Align Shorts. I love that the tank hides my post-baby belly (I’m milking this post-baby thing for as long as I can get away with it), and while I’m not in love with how shorts look on me and the state of my thighs, I’m willing to give the Kino MacGregor justification for yoga shorts a shot. I’ll review those pieces once I’ve had a chance to test them out.
The new Athleta store is at the Domain, next to Coach and across from the Tesla store. Definitely worth checking out, and they do free hemming for their pieces and have a fantastic return policy if the performance of a piece isn’t up to par.
