The Austin area has been suffering from the HIGHEST cedar levels ever measured this week. The most exposure I have to the elements is running between my car and work and daycare, and for those brief moments, I still have itchy eyes, congestion and drainage. Seeing how I’m pregnant, my options for drugs are severely limited.
Here’s how I’ve been tackling things without ingesting medications:
Humidifier. We have humidifiers in both our bedroom and our son’s. The air is so dry here right now that the drainage and congestion get worse without having it on all night.
Neti pot, Neil Med pre-measured salt packs and Alkalol. As I mentioned in my neti pot post a few months ago, adding the Alkalol to the saline solution has been a godsend. We now do a subscription order through Amazon so a new bottle shows up at our house every other month. They’re currently on sale at Walgreens and Amazon for $5.99 a bottle.
Antihistamine eye drops. My oldest sister is an optometrist, and she recommended Zaditor. It’s a teeny tiny bottle, but it lasts a while. You only need to do one drop per eye, twice a day. It’s so cool and refreshing! I’m guilty of doing the drops only every once in a while, but it becomes more effective when you use them multiple days in a row.
Cut back on dairy. I don’t drink a lot of milk to begin with, but I do eat yogurt on the regular. I’m cutting back on both for the time being since dairy makes my mucus production worse.
Acupuncture. I should really do this one more often. I tend to go after I’ve suffered way too long and have a sinus infection. Thankfully, my acupuncturist friend Pearl is only 5 minutes from home. I need to remember to get on her schedule ASAP!
