Yoga has arrived on South Congress in a new studio called Yoga Illumined, opened by Zoe Mantarakis and Sumukhi Kristina Lanuza. The studio’s class offerings incorporate all limbs of yoga (including asana), so expect to learn and experience more than physical postures.
I attended a meditations and mantra class with Sumukhi, which had no asanas. Instead, we got cozy on bolsters and blankets and experienced her beautiful soaring voice while she played the harmonium and chanted mantras. Coming from an ashtanga background with limited chanting, this was such a treat for me.
Glittering gold details are found throughout the studio, which is a single large room. Ginger cookies and hot tea are available after class to retain inner warmth and soak in the experience. As silly as it may seem, the bolsters (from India) add to the ambience of the space, which really feel like the marrying of this ancient practice and modern day spirituality.
One interesting class offering to note is the Group Practice. It’s less of a formal teacher-led class and more like group play and exploration. Everyone could use a little more lightheartedness in their practice!
The current newbie special is $20 for 20 days of unlimited yoga. Drop-in rates range from $12 to $20, depending on prepaid online or walk-in and the length of class (60, 75 or 90 minutes). Community classes taught by teachers-in-training are $5.
